Q: 2. Does the examination and cleaning cost only €15 for PRSI?

Yes, for individuals with valid PRSI, an annual dental examination, cleaning (referred to as scaling in medical terms), and polishing after the cleaning, costs only 15 euros.However, it is important to mention that if you do not have or have not had a panoramic X-ray taken at our clinic for a long time, comprehensive patient care may require such an X-ray (exceptions are made in cases where patients cannot be exposed to X-rays for health reasons, e.g., pregnancy).The cost of the Panoramic (OPG) X-ray is: € 35 If our patient does not consent to the X-ray, their dentist may refuse further care due to the lack of appropriate diagnostic tools, depending on the assessment of the case. Naturally, if necessary, we can also send the X-ray to our patients via email. If you need the X-ray(s), please let us know!

About PRSI

What PRSI is?

In Ireland, PRSI stands for " Pay Related Social Insurance." PRSI is a social insurance contribution made by both employers and employees, and it funds various social welfare benefits and pensions. The amount of PRSI contributions depends on factors such as your income, employment status, and social insurance class.

PRSI contributions are automatically deducted from your wages by your employer and are used to finance a range of social welfare programs, including state pensions, illness benefit, jobseeker's benefit, maternity benefit, and more.

Suir Clinic and PRSI

Suir Clinic Waterford is a registered provider of The Treatment Benefit Scheme, which entitles PRSI workers to claim a free oral examination once per calendar year as well as a scale & polish (cleaning) for only €15.

The Treatment Benefit Scheme is run by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. It provides dental, optical, hair piece/ wig and aural services to insured workers, the self-employed and retired people who have the required number of social insurance (PRSI) contributions.

To qualify, you must have paid class A, E, P, H or S social insurance (PRSI) contributions. The amount of social insurance you need depends on your age.

If your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant does not have enough social insurance contributions, they may still qualify for Treatment Benefit on your social insurance record.

To do this, you must qualify for Treatment Benefit and your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant must be dependent on you.

4. What happens during a PRSI dental appointment?

An annual routine dental examination is a preventive measure that involves a comprehensive check-up of your teeth, gums, and mouth. During this exam, the dentist looks for signs of decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. X-rays may be taken to identify any problems not visible to the naked eye (X-rays are charged separately). The goal is to detect and address any dental issues early before they become more serious and require more extensive or complex treatment.

One crucial aspect of this examination is the removal of microorganisms and plaque, known as scaling (in medical terms, depuration). Tartar is hardened plaque that accumulates on the teeth over time and cannot be removed by regular brushing and flossing. If left untreated, tartar buildup can lead to gum disease, cavities, and bad breath. Scaling is essential to maintaining oral health, as it helps prevent these issues and keeps your gums and teeth healthy.

After the tartar has been removed, polishing the teeth is the next step. Polishing smooths the surface of the teeth, removing any remaining plaque and stains, and making it more difficult for new plaque to accumulate. This process not only leaves your teeth feeling clean and smooth but also helps to prevent future tartar buildup. It also improves the appearance of your teeth, giving them a brighter and shinier look.

6. How long does a PRSI treatment visit typically last?

On average, an annual dental check-up, teeth cleaning, and polishing take about 30 minutes. However, it may take longer to achieve proper cleaning, especially for patients with chronic gingivitis or periodontitis, or in cases where there are generalized discolorations and deposits caused by diet or bad habits. In such cases, we may schedule a separate appointment for the actual teeth cleaning after the initial examination.

7. What if my PRSI application is not approved?

If you contact us to check your PRSI entitlement before making an appointment, and according to the national database you are not eligible for the Treatment Benefit Scheme, we will inform you of this. You can then make informed decisions regarding your appointment booking.

If you discover at the clinic that you are not entitled to the benefits provided by PRSI, you may still choose to proceed with the treatment. Please inquire about the costs involved either at our clinic, by phone, or at Suir Clinic fees. However, if you decide not to proceed with the treatment after receiving this information, we will cancel your appointment. Due to the costs associated with holding the appointment and the failure of the treatment to take place, we will charge a compensation fee (if an advance booking fee has been paid, our company is entitled to retain it; if no booking fee was paid, any further treatment or appointment scheduling will only be possible after the mentioned fee is paid).

If retrieving data from the database fails, either on the server (myWelfare) or through our computer system (including internet service or computer malfunction) before the treatment begins, you will need to settle the treatment costs. If your entitlement was active, we will, of course, compensate you. In such cases, please inquire at our reception regarding the options for compensation.

Our company will do everything possible to prevent such inconveniences for both you and ourselves. Therefore, if you have a booked PRSI appointment, we will check your PRSI eligibility in advance. However, in certain cases, this may not happen (human error, failure of the IT system/network, same-day appointment bookings, or other cases). Therefore, we kindly ask that you always have sufficient coverage for the cost of the treatment (credit/debit card or cash) to avoid any potential inconveniences.

8. What if your dentist recommends tartar removal more than once a year?

In this case, you can still only avail yourself of your PRSI benefits once a year. Any additional dental hygiene treatments and examination fees beyond this will need to be paid at our standard rates, as listed on our price list.

9. How can you check your PRSI eligibility?

You can verify your PRSI status at MyWelfare.ie using your MyGovID account, or through any registered provider of the Treatment Support Program, like Suir Clinic. Contact us using one of our contact methods, and after obtaining the necessary information and your consent, our team will be happy to assist you.
